Lunettes noires et perruque argentée, la star, nouvelle égérie de la maison Poiray,
épate dans David et Madame Hansen. Après un détour par Bollywood,
elle tournera avec Abel Ferrara un film librement inspiré de l’affaire DSK.

Madame Figaro. - Le principal trait de votre caractère ?
Isabelle Adjani. - Parce que la vie privilégie cet aspect de mon caractère en ce moment, je dirais"endurante" exceptionnellement endurante.
Celui dont vous êtes moins satisfaite ?
Une forme d’impatience devant les obstacles, qui me rend susceptible de perdre foi...en tout.
Que changeriez-vous chez vous si vous le pouviez ?
Je m’emploie, depuis quelque temps, à ne m’attarder qu’auprès de bonnes âmes qui me disent « Surtout ne changez rien ». Alors je ne sais plus, à force !
Qu’avez-vous réussi de mieux dans la vie ?
Le ratage de ma vie amoureuse. Un exploit dont je ne suis pas peu fière, ajouterais-je avec un sens de l’autodérision qui me sauve la vie au moins tous les dimanches. (Rires.)
Un autre talent que vous aimeriez avoir ?
Celui d’avoir tous les talents pour s’aimer et trouver la vie belle chaque jour.
Que partagez-vous avec Madame Hansen ?
Les lunettes noires. J’en porte depuis mes premiers pas dans la célébrité, été comme hiver. Je crois qu’une photo de Jackie Kennedy avec ses fameuses lunettes à la forme ultra-chic, en est la cause. Et la phrase parfaitement romantique de Roland Barthes : « Elles servent à montrer tout ce qu’on veut cacher. »
Hollywood ou Bollywood ??
Je viens de tourner en hindi dans le très kitsch Ishqk in Paris, du jeune metteur en scène Prem Raj, un film Bollywood pur jus, une première dans la carrière d’une actrice occidentale.
Pour vous, le luxe, c’est... ?
Ne pas avoir de problème d’argent.
Votre mot favori ?
Ni « improbable » ni « énorme », les nouveaux mots phares de notre profession, me faisait remarquer l’autre jour l’écrivain scénariste Raffy Shart.
La phrase qui vous déstabilise ?
« À moi, tu sais que tu peux faire confiance. »
Un objet qui ne vous quitte pas ?
Tout me quitte. Je perds tout ! Même la médaille miraculeuse que m’offre régulièrement une amie "indécourageable " (Rires.)
Qu’aimeriez-vous que l’on dise de vous ?
J’ai reçu les plus beaux compliments, j’ai eu droit au pire aussi, depuis mes débuts. « On » pourrait dire qu’on en a déjà assez dit.
Votre résolution ferme pour la rentrée ?
Faire et être ce qui est bon pour moi uniquement. Être un cœur avec moi-même !(rires)

Patrice Chereau edited the original cut of the film (roughly 160 minutes) to a smaller 138 minutes for international release. This was due to a disappointing box-office performance in France and the criticism (by, among others, Variety critic Todd McCarthy) of the film as being too violent and often incoherent. The French press were scathing of this 'American censorship' (they described the film as having been 'given a face-lift' for American audiences) but the new version was defended by various French critics being both more coherent whilst also maintaining Chereau's artistic vision. The shorter cut was later released in France too, in the hopes of increasing the film's box-office takings.

The film was the highest-grossing foreign film in Britain during the year of its release; its box office gross of £600,000, at the time, ranked it amongst the highest grossing foreign films of all time in the UK.

The scene between Margot and La Mole, where they stand outdoors wrapped in nothing but a red cloak, was included for the American release even though it had not appeared in the original cut. The American distributors had insisted on the relationship between the two characters being more substantial (the romance was to become the focal point for the American marketing campaign).
