Trivia
Showing all 8 items
-The model used for the crash sequence cost $250,000 and was so perfectly built(ben à ce prix là...) it actually flew further than the crew and testing had predicted. In fact it flew so far it hit the camera filming it and broke the cameraman's leg.

-Like James Stewart, who played Frank Towns in the 1965 version of "Flight of the Phoenix", Dennis Quaid is an experienced pilot.

-The production built a "Phoenix" that could be taxied, but were unable to safely build a flying version economically. Mindful of the original production which did build a "Phoenix" that could fly, but was structurally unsound and crashed killing stuntman Paul Mantz, the flying scenes were done using a radio controlled model and computer graphics.

-Miranda Otto's character, an engineer, is named "Kelly Johnson". Kelly Johnson is the name of a legendary aircraft engineer for Lockheed who designed the P-388 Lightning fighter of WWII. Later he ran the Lockheed "Skunk Works" which secretly produced the U-2 and SR-71 spy planes. In view of the fact that aircraft design is a key element of the plot, it is unlikely that the name is a coincidence.

-The aircraft used in the film is a Fairchild C-119, a direct descendent of the WWII era C-82 used in the original film

-The production transported three C-119 fuselages to Namibia where the film was shot. During transportation, a ferry carrying the fuselage and its trailer across a river sank and the parts had to be salvaged.

-Miranda Otto's character was not in the original version of the film.

-This film premiered in U.S. theaters on December 17, 2004, which marked cast member Giovanni Ribisi's 30th birthday.

Good adventure survival film

I saw Flight of the Phoenix Saturday night and thoroughly enjoyed it. The special effects were wonderful and the acting was great. I am a big fan of Dennis Quaid, and he did a great job in the role of Frank Townes. Taking a role that the icon Jimmy Stewart had is not easy but Dennis did it admirably, and Stewart would have been proud(?) the way it turned out. Giovanni Ribisi was in top form as Elliot, and the rest of the cast played their roles well. A lot of people have compared it to the original, but it is really unfair to do so. The original came out in 1965 when we were still in the Cold War, and WWII was a recent memory.

There were also more character actors, and there was the German in Ribisi's role. This cast is multi ethnic and there is a woman, reflecting the advances made in society since then. It certainly doesn't detract from the movie and you don't think about it while watching. There is more action in this version, but that is not a bad thing. The desert scenes were fantastic. I actually came out of the movie thirsty! LOL ! I just wish they had left the movie in October, as there are so many films out now, it will get lost in the shuffle. If you are a fan of survivor movies, go see it.

A GREAT movie, with a GREAT cast!!!

Yes, the original "Flight of the Phoenix" is a gold-standard classic; I mean, come on, it's Jimmy Stewart and an excellent supporting cast!! Well, in my humble opinion, Dennis Quaid and crew do an every-bit-as-good-if-not-even-better version with this dynamite action movie!! The special-effects are also a big star here; the sequence of the plane flying into the storm, losing it's propeller and eventually crashing are thrilling and exciting to watch! As they start to rebuild the plane into a flyable unit, I liked to see the emotions and conflicts among the survivors and how they come together to overcome the desert and the forces of Nature. The directing and camera movement added a more realistic touch, making the movie more realistic and "gritty". Also an excellent soundtrack kept the pace tight and hard-edged! I own a copy of both "Flights" and enjoy watching them both, a lot!! LONG LIVE Hollywood!!!

Movie makers used artistic license
10/10
Author: madmatt7800 from Winston-Salem, NC
2 October 2005

Several things must be said here, the most important being the artistic thought processes of telling a story on the screen. It has been said Flight of the Phoenix has reality flaws, engineering flaws, and (the most "interesting" one) characterization flaws. This movie is based on a novel - a work of fiction. The fun thing about writing, producing, directing, and acting out a film like this is that you can "bend the rules" a bit to tell your story - otherwise known as using artistic license. Many critics don't seem to understand what that means.

A sandstorm of the magnitude that was depicted in the film would have definitely brought the plane down, smashing it into tiny pieces. That is a fact of reality. However, if you stuck with this then you'd have no movie. The film would be over, because all the characters would be dead. Therefore, the filmmakers chose to (very well) crash the plane dramtically and have most of the passengers survive. Speaking of the sandstorm, yes, it was huge, and yes, it was computer-generated, and no, I did not even think about that when I watched the movie. All I could do was get sucked into the action and story, watching this tiny plane get sucked down by this bigger-than-life force of nature.

Building a new plane out of a wrecked one is certainly a far-fetched idea, and from an engineering standpoint is ridiculous. That's the hook that gets you into the story, you see. It's the whole "They can't do that, can they" thing that keeps suspense, along with their struggles with surviving with each other and with limited food and water. These are good things that make for a stress-filled (in a good way) film.

The acting in this film isn't Oscar-winning, but it is real - real characters put together in an unbelievable situation. The struggle with the characters, as well as with a lot of the rest of the film, I think, comes when people who have seen the Jimmy Stewart version try to compare it, as if the new filmmakers were going to do a shot-by-shot, line-by-line recreation. No, this film is a re-interpretation of the story, and Dennis Quaid is NOT James Stewart. All of the characters have been reinterpreted, each actor giving a new, personal spin on the story. It's a different pilot, a different engineer, and a different passenger list. Some names might stay the same, but that's about it.

The screenwriters chose, out of their rights as artists, to rework and update an old story, and they did quite well. I have not seen the 1965 Phoenix, as I'm sure most of the contemporary movie-going public has not, so there's nothing for me to "compare" the new film to. The movie makers succeeded in what they set out to do - bring the story of the Flight of the Phoenix to a new generation of film audiences. The problems only come if you try to compare it to the old one.

a great movie

*** This review may contain spoilers ***

I found this movie to not only be inspiring, but to also give us a good perspective of how people will do anything with hope, and when that hope disappears they will totally lose any hope,(voui...curieux hein ?) and that shines out, both when they agree they will build it, and you really see how they have a new energy, and when they find out he is a model airplane builder, when they lose hope, and you see them actually lose all there energy.

I found most of the acting excellent but some effects were little unbelievable. for instance the wing smashing the chef and him living through that, I still don't get what was supposed to happen there. Over all i think this was a great movie, but since i did not watch the original, I don't know if they met the standards of the original or not.

I really have to say how much I loved the character play by Giovanni Ribisi it was awesome to see.(chuis d'accord...pour moi un de ses meilleurs rôles) I would love to see him play in more films like this. Dennis is excellent. The rest of the actors were heart warming to the hilt. It seems like life in a small way..turning negative to positives. Thank God for great writers, and actors! What I wonder about is did they film this movie in a desert? Just curious..And if so, were they able to take breaks a lot, drink water and such? Great Movie! A terrific movie I could see everyday! I wonder too, if at all could any of this really be true? I really enjoy good movies..this is one that is good.

Pheonix certainly takes Flight for me!

As a fourteen-year-old writer, I don't find too many movies fascinating and captivating. As a fan of fantasy and war movies, The Flight of the Pheonix is something that I would not have picked out, were it sitting on a shelf in front of me. Well, somehow it got into my DVD player and for some reason I pushed "Play" and the rest is history. . . . The Flight of the Phoenix is certainly an amazing movie with the best actors possible! And I am not just saying that because I have a minute obsession with Tony Curran (-stifflesscream-), who plays Alex Rodney. Anyway! The Flight of the Phoenix is absolutely brilliant!! I am, in fact, writing a FanFiction for it! http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2949386/1/

Excellent story and cinematography
10/10
Author: kathyatsf from United States
29 November 2006

I love the cinematography, the visual effects of flying scenes were awesome, the flight sequences were well done. I watched this movie numerous times, each time with a different thrill and excitement level. The story progresses rapidly - from the take off of the plane to the crash scene, to the rebuilding of the plane to the struggles between the men and harsh elements of the desert and the interplay between various characters to the successful take off of the Phenoix(ah ah!) and those survived return to home safely. Dennis Quaid is one of the greatest actors ever, his constant high standard of performance makes this movie on track and on point. Hugh Lauie is great actor too, all the other actors are good in this movie.
