If you need a lift after watching "Ladder 49", check this out!
10/10

If you need a lift after watching the excellent yet rip your heart out epic "Ladder 49", check this out! It's a better remake than even 2003's "The In-Laws", because not only is it more upbeat and hip, the new cast of characters in this remake avoids the pitfall of the annoying obnoxiousness that sinks some of the characters in the "In Laws" remake (chiefly the friends of the bride. Ack!) Yes, Dennis Quaid might not be Jimmy Stewart, but he is more than capable as an actor, and the way this remake is scripted makes him perfect for the role Jimmy played, Captain Frank Towns, since Towns is a tougher guy in this version than in the original. Ditto the rest of the cast, especially good IL' Giovanni Ribisi as the plane designer.

It is more action/adventure oriented than the original, which was more a character study in a hostile environment, which is a good change, considering the current taste for action adventure that propelled flicks like the last two "Matrix" movies to beau coup dollars-ville. At the same time, the characters are likable and sketched out enough that we like and root for them. Most memorable moment in this "Flight": the climax! Man, what a RUSH... All in all, if you rent "Ladder 49", be sure to pick this up too and watch it after "49" to perk yourself up. Heck, pick this flick up anyway. IT ROCKS!

Enjoyable and Dramatic

AT first look, you wouldn't think much of this movie. It is, after all, a remake, and remakes and sequels rarely do as good as the original-with the exception of Spiderman 2 and Shrek 2, and some others. But i think this movie did a fine job balancing the new actors in the same storyline. The story is about a group of oil drillers, who after their company is shut down, has to be flown out. En route, the plane encounters a storm and crashes in the desert-miles away from civilization. Giovanni Ribisi gives an awesome performance as Elliot, the passenger who has a plan to rebuild a new plane out of the wreckage of the old one, using only what they brought with them.

Dennis Quiad also does a good job portraying Captain Towns, the pilot. His character is the one everyone looks to after the plane crashes, and although uneasy about everyone looking to him, manages to get them out safely. The twist in the movie is 40 yrs old, but when it is finally revealed in the film the actors do a great job reacting to it. Flight of the Phoenix did have some flaws, like the layout of the Gobi desert and the damage to the plane, but all in all i would give it a 7.5 out of 10. I would also recommend the original-just so you could see the background of how the movie was made in the past.

Saw the film (j'ai vu le film)
7/10
Author: Stanley Rocklin from United States
28 September 2010

One needs to remember that French (and films from other foreign countries) films are not like American films. Neither the ending, nor the writing, nor the production may be what you might expect if most of what you see are American films. We liked the film, it wasn't great, but I do not consider it a waste of my time. We watched it on TV5, the DISH-TV French extra cost channel. TV5 gave DISH the wrong description, as it was for ONE LAST FLIGHT, a movie about a boy & his grandpa who share their love for aviation.

Surprise, surprise, it was about a woman trying to enlist the French Foreign Legion (Légion Étrangère) to help her. We saw it in French and I ignore the subtitles, but my wife reads them. I'm French, she's English. We both concurred that the woman pilot looking for her lost love was NOT married to the lost love (as said elsewhere on this page). He was married to another.

Anyway, just take these films for what they are, just a fantasy, and dismiss your critical sense and let your imagination put you right up on that screen, next to the characters as they play out their parts. That's my goal. Hope this helps. Rocky in Arizona
