Denzel Washington shows us yet again that he is one of the premier actors of the past 25 years. His convincing portrayal of an alcoholic is downright painful to watch, and I mean this in a very good way,it is such a believable performance.He is the pilot of a plane that crashes yet his skill as an aviator saves almost all of the passengers.

The aircraft is clearly in need of an overhaul, but it's his drug and alcohol addiction that comes prominently into question. With a great supporting cast, including John Goodman, whose character lights up the screen in the few scenes he's in (and someone he's worked with before, 'Fallen' in 1998, and with the Rolling Stones' music figuring in both films!)

and Don Cheadle, a much more straitlaced character than Mouse, from Devil in a Blue Dress(95) where he played opposite Denzel. Kelly Reilly is also wonderful as an addict who befriends Whip (Denzel). Great characters in a well told tale.

Paramount picture, so we see that lovely mountain.

Lead male is played by Denzel Washington. As film opens we see him waking for an early morning flight. The opening scene sets the scene for what is about to unfold, and so is not to be missed. Film moves quickly on to the flight, which encounters difficulties, to be blunt the plane nose-dives. The plane is going down (even while some stragglers are still coming into the cinema!).

Plane crash is done well by film and pilot. This is no rugby team crashing into the Andes Mountains. It is as dramatic, though the forced landing is not as destructive. Main theme of the film is how the crash effects Denzel Washington. In an interview, Washington says the film had nothing to do with the story of the plane that landed in the Hudson River, rather the story is about ten years old, and is based on a real-life event, thus the engineering and flying aspects are technically correct and actors used a simulator in preparation for the role.

Washington is a man with a good heart, but not a stout one, instead he is rather weak-hearted. After the crash, he meets others who have some effect on him. Washington is very believable as he deals with the emotions and situations that beset him. Nothing else however is to be expected from this great actor. Those who have seen him as the senior policeman in 'Training Day' or playing the gangster Frank Lucas, know he gives great performances of real depth, showing real human emotion, showing the bad in the good, and the good in the bad.

Some humour is injected with the appearance of John Goodman. Goodman who showed much pathos as Babe Ruth, who graced TV screens as the stage husband of 'Rosanne', is now gracing the screen with lovely cameo roles. However those who loved him in 'Argo' may have difficulty in spotting him. Not since Sean Penn was lawyer Dave, to his client Al Pacino, in 'Carlito's Way', have we seen such a transformation. It is as if that Argo film producer had been doing his own make-up for this film. Goodman is in only briefly but plays to the hilt his larger-than-life character.

Supporting cast give good performances, but a special mention should go to a stalwart from the 'Law & Order SVU' TV series, who gives a very strong performance. There again, you don't spend years on a TV series without learning how to act. In the main thread of the story, and the other threads, this film deals with adult themes. In the UK, it is rated 15. These adult themes are not hidden, and are central to the plot. This film surpassed my expectations, and finding no fault with it, I must give it a 10/10.

'Flight' reaches new heights

Flight is one of the best films of 2012. Simple as that.

Telling the story of a commerical airline pilot who lands a crashing plane and saving over 90 lives, the film is always in control of our attention. Director Robert Zemeckis shows us what we've been missing while he's been directing nothing but animated films for 12 years. He has this great vibe in the film that is hard to explain, but it's great to look at.

The writing is spot on, with some great moments that are only helped by the amazing acting from the cast. Washington gives one of the best performances of 2012, the century and from himself. His portrayal of this drug addicted pilot is nothing short of legendary and it really gets under your skin. Incredible.

Also, John Goodman is always fantastic and here is no different. He really adds that touch of quirkiness to the film that is more than welcome. He's also incredible (as always). Geraghty proves to be a great talent that shows us how a 'normal' person would react if they were co- piloting a plane that's plummeting towards the ground. Kelly Reilly is a big surprise here.

I wasn't expecting her role to be that important but she makes it imperitve to the story moving forward. Greenwood is excellent and definitely overlooked in this film (and he's such an underrated actor in general). Finally, Cheadle gives a performance that is definitely pitch perfect (like the rest of the cast). I think without this acting, the film would definitely fail as a lot of the time, the film does become a character study and thank goodness the actors really make their characters come alive.

So to conclude, Flight has a compelling story that should stay with you for quite a while. The acting is nothing short of exemplary, especially Washington who should hit home with many viewers. The direction and cinematography is excellent and will always give you the best angles. And the soundtrack is very, very good. Giving the film that ominous feeling, loss and just downright sadness that the film portrays. If you enjoy a great story that gets into your head, I recommend this film as strongly as I can.

Budweiser contre-attaque

La marque de bière Budweiser n'a pas apprécié que dans le film le personnage principal soit vu avec une bouteille de la marque en conduisant. La marque ne voulait pas être associée à l'alcoolisme et a demandé à ce que leur logo soit flouté.

Le vice-président de l'entreprise Robert McCartney a par ailleurs déclaré « nous avons une longue histoire dans la promotion de la conduite responsable et dans la prévention de l'alcoolisme au volant ».

Dans une lettre adressée à Robert Zemeckis, Budweiser a demandé que leur logo soit effacé de tous les supports d'exploitation du film (streaming, vidéo à la demande, DVD, Blu-ray, ...).

Clins d’œil
Quand John Goodman apparait pour la première fois dans le hall de l’hôpital, il écoute Sympathy for the Devil, un clin d’œil au film Le Témoin du Mal dont il a partagé la vedette du film avec Denzel Washington.

Quand John Goodman entre dans la chambre de l’hôpital, il insulte l'infirmière et la surnomme "Miss Ratched". C'est une référence au rôle de Louise Fletcher dans Vol au-dessus d'un nid de coucou.

Autre référence cinématographique : dans les escaliers de l’hôpital, le cancéreux dit  "J'adore l'odeur de la nicotine au petit matin ! », parodiant ainsi la réplique culte d'Apocalypse Now (« J'aime l'odeur du napalm au petit matin ! »).

Casting

Denzel Washington a passé de nombreuses heures sur un simulateur de vol et à discuter avec des pilotes. Dans le film, il porte même un sac de vol qui appartient à un véritable ancien pilote : « toutes ces petites choses vous permettent de rentrer dans le rôle et de faire croire au public que vous êtes vraiment cette personne ».

L'actrice britannique Kelly Reilly était en vacances au Texas pendant le casting et ne pouvait y assister Désirant à tout prix un rôle, elle a envoyé une cassette. D'emblée séduit,Robert Zemeckis ne lui a même pas fait passer d'essai.

Tournage

Durant le tournage, Robert Zemeckis a décidé de tourner les scènes dans l'ordre chronologique de l'histoire Il a également demandé au scénariste John Gatins d'être présent tous les jours sur le plateau pour faire évoluer le scénario au gré du tournage qui a duré 48 jours.

Développement

Après les films d'animation Le Pôle express, La Légende de Beowulf et Le Drôle de Noël de Scrooge, ce film marque le retour de Robert Zemeckis au live plus de 10 ans après Seul au monde.

L'histoire du film s'approche de celle de Robert Piché. En 2001, ce pilote québécois réussit l'exploit de poser son avion en difficulté et de sauver ainsi ses 300 passagers. Devenu un véritable héros, son passé oublié de criminel avait alors été déterré par un journaliste.

La nature de la panne affectant l'appareil et les réactions de l’équipage (vol sur le dos) sont par ailleurs inspirés de l'accident réel du Vol 261 Alaska Airlines, dans lequel la gouverne de profondeur d'un McDonnell Douglas MD-83 s'est bloquée en position basse. Lors de la scène de l'Audition du pilote, vers la fin du film, les images présentées par le jury (pas de vis détérioré sur la commande de la gouverne) sont celles de cet accident réel, qui coûta la vie à 88 personnes.

Par ailleurs,le scénariste John Gatins a eu l'idée de Flight dès 1999,alors qu'il était conseiller technique sur le tournage d'un film de guerre.Toujours entouré d'anciens pilotes de l'armée de l'air, il se demanda alors comment était la vie de ces pilotes, une fois qu'ils étaient revenus sur terre. Dans une interview pour le Los Angeles Times en 2012, John Gatins déclare s'être aussi inspiré du crash du vol 261 Alaska Airlines survenu le 31 janvier 2000.
