Morgan Freeman est un acteur américain né le 1er juin 1937 à Memphis, dans le Tennessee.

Habitué aux seconds rôles pendant plus de vingt ans, il est révélé tardivement à la fin des années 80 par des films comme Miss Daisy et son chauffeur et Glory. Depuis, il s'est imposé comme l'un des grands acteurs américains, à travers des films comme Impitoyable, Les Évadés, Seven, Million Dollar Baby et Invictus.

 Biographie

Morgan Freeman est né dans une fratrie de quatre enfants à Memphis (Tennessee) de Mayme Edna Revere et Morgan Porterfield Freeman, vétéran de la Seconde Guerre mondiale mort en 1961 d'une cirrhose du foie.

Enfant, il est confié par ses parents à sa grand-mère paternelle vivant à Charleston, où il passe son enfance dans le quartier noir1. C'est à l'âge de 10 ans qu'il découvre le théâtre, dans le cadre d'une pièce montée par son école. À 18 ans, il sort diplômé du lycée de Greenwood (Mississippi). Il cherche alors un emploi stable et s'engage dans l'US Air Force comme mécanicien, puis secrétaire sténo assermenté. En 1964, après une révélation, il prend la décision de devenir acteur et se met en recherche de rôles.

Une fois ses obligations militaires accomplies, il s'installe en Californie pour étudier la danse et l'art dramatique au Los Angeles City College. Il fréquente à ses débuts de nombreuses troupes de théâtres et des festivals champêtres. Il obtient des petits rôles à la télévision dans des soap opera et se fait particulièrement remarquer dans le rôle d'un vampire végétarien.

Carrière

C'est à Broadway qu'il fait ses débuts d'acteur en 1967 dans la reprise de Hello Dolly ! avec Pearl Bailey. La même année, il se fait remarquer, toujours au théâtre, pour son interprétation dans The Nigger Lovers aux côtés de Stacy Keach et Viveca Lindfors. À la télévision, c'est en incarnant le personnage populaire et récurrent d'Easy Reader dans la série The Electric Company qu'il se fait connaître du public américain.

Morgan Freeman s'impose sur le tard au cinéma. En 1987, son rôle de Fast Black dans La Rue lui vaut de nombreuses récompenses (Meilleur second rôle masculin aux New York Film Critics Awards, Los Angeles Film Critics Awards et National Society of Film Critics Awards), ainsi qu'une nomination aux Golden Globes. Miss Daisy et son chauffeur lui permet de remporter en 1990 un Golden Globe, un Ours d'argent et une nomination aux Oscars pour son interprétation de chauffeur noir. Dès lors, il enchaîne les succès commerciaux comme Glory (1989) de Edward Zwick,Robin des Bois,prince des voleurs (1991) de Kevin Reynolds ou encore Impitoyable (1992) de Clint Eastwood.

Il interprète souvent des personnages qui s'illustrent par leur sagesse et leur détermination il est le juge Leonard White dans Le Bûcher des vanités (1991), le prisonnier modèle dans Les Evadés (1994), un policier lucide face à l'impétueux Brad Pitt dans Seven (1995), le Président des États-Unis dans Deep Impact (1997), l'inspecteur tenace interrogeant le milliardaire Hearst (Gene Hackman) dans Suspicion (2000), le supérieur hiérarchique de l'analyste de la CIA Jack Ryan (Ben Affleck) dans La Somme de toutes les peurs (2002) ou encore l'artiste aveugle prenant sous son aile le vulnérable Danny (Jet Li) dans Danny the Dog (2004). C'est en campant le profiler Alex Cross dans Le Collectionneur (1997) et Le Masque de l'araignée (2001) que Morgan Freeman retrouve un des rôles de tout premier plan.

Par ses choix d'acteur, il fait preuve d'un engagement politique certain. Prenant fait et cause pour la population noire américaine, il incarne Malcom X à la télévision dans Death of the Prophet(1981)et joue le rôle d'un abolitionniste dans Amistad (1997)Il dénonce les horreurs de l'apartheid dans Bopha ! (1993), son premier film en tant que réalisateur, et a rencontré à plusieurs reprises Nelson Mandela, qu'il incarne dans Invictus (2009).

Il diversifie parallèlement son jeu en apparaissant là où on ne l'attend pas : truand sauvage dans Nurse Betty (2000), il est un colonel aux ambitions troubles dans Dreamcatcher, l'attrape-rêves (2003), voire Dieu dans les comédies Bruce tout puissant (2003) et Evan tout-puissant (2007). À 68 ans, il obtient enfin la reconnaissance de la profession en remportant l'Oscar du meilleur second rôle masculin pour son interprétation d'un ancien boxeur borgne dans Million Dollar Baby (2005), réalisé par son fidèle ami Clint Eastwood. Il apparaît aussi dans le rôle de Lucius Fox dans les films Batman Begins (2005), The Dark Knight : Le Chevalier noir (2008) et The Dark Knight Rises (2012) réalisés par Christopher Nolan, puis dans le rôle d'un agent de la CIA dans le film Red (2010), aux côtés de Bruce Willis.

Depuis 2010, il est le producteur et le narrateur de l'émission de télévision Voyage dans l’espace-temps diffusé par Discovery Channel. Il a été en 1994 membre du jury du 44e festival de Berlin.

Vie privée

Marié une première fois en 1967 à Jeanette Adair Bradshaw et père de deux fils, il épouse en secondes noces en 1984 Myrna Colley, avec qui il a deux autres enfants. Le couple divorce en 2010.

En 2012, il révèle être atteint de fibromyalgie, une maladie neuro-musculaire non mortelle mais très handicapante, survenue à la suite d'un accident de voiture, quatre ans auparavant.

A Fine summer movie. Just what you would expect from Rob Reiner.

Love and sharing can come in many forms. So too, growth and development. Reiner scores well touching all aspects of the good side of humans.

He also gives a complete picture of life seen through the simplistic eyes of children while allowing the complex world of adults be part of the story without taking any of the magic from childhood. The cast is wonderful and I loved the strength, power, and insecurity of Morgan Freeman. One again admires Reiner's ability to show complex stories through the strength of his actors rather than depending on CG and other cheap slight-of-hand fakery.

A Good Movie

If it's Sunday afternoon and you're kind of bored, if you're not in the mood for anything in particular, press play on "The Magic of Bell Isle".

These movie will not disappoint you, it will not leave a bad taste but rather it will leave you smiling and feeling good. The story is very original and well written. The characters are not well developed but it doesn't matter because the dialogue is remarkable. You will find some great quotes in this film and I guarantee you'll be smiling at the end. It's a very light comedy with just a pinch of drama, and the reason is such a good film is,of course,Morgan Freeman

A Writer Regains the Will to Live

Rob Reiner's "The Magic of Belle Isle" tells the story of a man who regains the will to live after entering the lives of a single mom and her three daughters. This is the kind of movie that divides audiences into two basic categories: Those that like sentimental dramas, and those that don't. I'm sure my opening description alone is enough for you to determine which category you fall into. For my money, the film is simple, well-intentioned, and good-hearted – flawed, yet protected and ultimately redeemed by its belief in second chances.

Given the hardships of reality, the last thing we need is a movie that reminds us of them. What we really need is a movie that gives us reason to hope for something better. You may think I'm naïve, although I prefer to think of myself as open to possibilities. The man at the center of the story is Monte Wildhorn (Morgan Freeman). As a young man, his athletic prospects were shattered when an accident robbed him of his ability to walk. He would go on to make a name for himself as a writer of western fiction, only to give up on it following the death of his beloved wife.

Wheelchair bound, in his golden years, and having lost everything including his faith, he now spends his days downing bottles of alcohol and making acerbic remarks. An easy target is his nephew, Henry (Kenan Thompson), who made arrangements for Monte to housesit a small house during the summer in a quiet upstate New York lakeside town. Part of this involves taking care of an old dog, whose refusal to fetch a ball will be a running gag throughout the entire film.

In due time, Monte meets his next-door neighbor, the soon-to-be-divorced Charlotte O'Neil (Virginia Madsen), and her three daughters. There's the rebellious teenager, Willow (Madeline Carroll), who really just wants to spend time with her unseen father. There's the little one, Flora (Nicolette Pierini), whose main purpose is to look adorable. Finally, there's the middle child, Finnegan, a.k.a. Finn (Emma Fuhrmann), a tomboy who has a flair for making up outlandish stories and testing them on Flora.

Despite her obvious gift, she's under the impression that she doesn't know how to be a writer, and so she appeals to Monte to be her mentor. Monte, of course, will initially come off as cantankerous before taking a liking to Finn, admiring her curiosity and determination. Several things come of this initial encounter. Firstly, Monte and Charlotte take the first steps towards falling in love. Secondly, he's invited to attend a memorial service for a man he never met and is asked by the town mayor (Fred Willard) to deliver an already-written eulogy.

This could, perhaps, be a lighthearted jab at Freeman's secondary career as a voice-over artist, but never mind. Thirdly, Finn will venture to Belle Isle, a tiny island in the middle of the lake, and retrieve a lunchbox full of her mother's school-age love letters. Monte will also befriend, as only he can, a mentally challenged man named Carl (Ash Christian), who hops rather than walks from one point to another.

Finally, he will be inspired to start writing again; although his new stories are structurally and grammatically appropriate for Flora, it's obvious that the subtexts are aimed squarely at Charlotte. Some time is reserved for a subplot involving Monte's agent, the delightfully named Joe Viola (Kevin Pollack), who's eager to get his client back in the game.

More specifically, he wants Monte to sell the rights to one of his books to Hollywood. Repeated phone calls go unreturned for obvious reasons, and so Viola isforced to drop by unannounced. I can't help but wonder how necessary this aspect of the story was, given the fact that the real focus is the relationship Monte shares with Charlotte and Finn. However, I do think it would have worked had it been separated from "The Magic of Belle Isle" and expanded into its own feature-length film, one a little less emotional and family- friendly.

I grant you that the story is contrived and that specific characters, most notably Carl, are included primarily as foils for Monte as he undergoes emotional rehabilitation. What saves it, by my standards, was the fact that there was obviously no malicious intent on the part of Reiner or Guy Thomas, the screenwriter.

The only questionable aspect of "The Magic of Belle Isle" is Monte educating Finn on how to be a writer. It's clear right from the start that she already knows what she's doing; to have her approach him and ask for guidance was forced and implausible. Apart from that, the film is no more or less that what it is, namely a harmless, feel-good story. While it may not win a spot on the shelf next to Reiner's more substantial films, it at least won't be mentioned in the same sentence with the year's worst films.
