Lasse Hallström aime la romance et possède un univers décalé et attachant ; le cinéaste revient avec ce nouveau film au titre étonnant, Des Saumons dans le désert, traduction plutôt approximative du titre original tiré d'un livre de Paul Torday, Salmon Fishing Yémen, Partie de pêche au Yémen. Le réalisateur suédois s'attache cette fois les services d' Ewan McGregor et Emily Blunt pour camper les premiers rôles de cette comédie britannique romantico-dramatique (?) au fort relent de sable chaud et de saumons frais.

Si le titre français se veut un tantinet racoleur, poisson et désert étant des mots intrinsèquement oxymoriques et a fortiori tape-à-l'oeil, le film, lui, n'est pas du tout de cet acabit. L'histoire est relativement simple mais assez insolite pour en soulever l'originalité. Un richissime Cheikh Yémenite passionné de pêche souhaite introduire des saumons dans son pays. L'homme fait appel à une chargée d'affaires légèrement névrosée, Harriet Chetwode-Talbot (Emily Blunt) et un scientifique spécialisé en pisciculture aussi farfelu que timide et coincé, le docteur Alfred Jones (Ewan McGregor).

D'abord réticent à se lancer dans le projet, estimant que c'est un caprice d'homme riche ne sachant que faire de son argent,Alfred est obligé d'accepter sous peine de se faire renvoyer (pouvoir de l'argent oblige la crise est passée par là),le tout sur fond de pressions gouvernementales qui souhaite rétablir de bonnes relations entre le Royaume-Uni et le Moyen-Orient.

A partir de ce postulat, Hallström tisse une oeuvre attachante qui tient sa force dans la profondeur psychologique de ses personnages plus que dans son scénario. Celui-ci souffre de moments de flottement et de certaines longueurs, notamment une longue exposition pour nous présenter tous les protagonistes dans leurs routines et leurs contextes.

En ce sens, le cinéaste n'est pas homme à miser sur une virtuosité de mise en scène ; optant pour la sobriété, les mouvements de caméra sont peu nombreux par exemple, Hallström livre une copie propre mais sans vraiment de partis pris personnels, ce qui empêche le film de s'élever plus haut que son ambition de gentillette (Ffff!!!) comédie romantique à l'anglaise.

Toutefois, la vraie force du film est donc dans ses personnages. Emily Blunt campe la pétulante Harriet, jeune fille à la fois sensible et enjouée. Sa personnalité contraste avec celle du docteur Alfred Jones, scientifique chevronné mais timide et maladroit, une sorte de mix entre le Jerry Lewis de Dr Jerry et Mister Love et le Dr Emmett Brown ( Christopher Lloyd) de Retour vers le futur.

McGregor excelle dans ce registre et forme, avec Emily Blunt, un duo attachant, drôle, piquant et complémentaire, la sensibilité exacerbée de l'une venant en aide au pragmatisme guindé de l'autre. Le couple rappelant étrangement celui formé par David Duchovny et Gillian Anderson dans la série TV X-Files, sauf que cette fois, les rôles sont inversés, la femme est ouverte et croit à l'impossible tandis que l'homme, enfermé dans son scepticisme scientifique refuse de tomber dans l'idéalisme à outrance et rejette toute idée de faisabilité du projet.

Cette idée de Foi donne place à des échanges savoureux entre Jones et le Cheikh, campé avec force et conviction par la star Egyptienne Amr Waked. A noter : la prestation absolument truculente de Kristin Scott Thomas dans le rôle de Bridget Maxwell, une spécialiste en communication garce, autoritaire, despotique et tranchante.Malheureusement trop peu présente à l'écran, l'actrice franco-britannique vaut tout de même à elle seule le visionnage du film tant son personnage se révèle un contrepoint formidable à l'intrigue principale apportant une touche comique et facétieuse indéniable.

Le scénariste Simon Beaufoy, déjà auteur de Slumdog Millionnaire et 127H pour Danny Boyle, continue encore dans ses thèmes concernant la Foi et l'abnégation et il faut dire que Des saumons dans le désert, bien que souffrant d'une certaine naïveté inhérente au genre ne sombre pas dans la guimauve à outrance Cependant, on voit que le cinéaste a fait attention de ne pas tomber dans les clichés moralisateurs mais n'a pas pu en éviter quelques-uns :

(l'amour triomphe toujours, l'homme est bon malgré tout, la Foi déplace des montagnes...), surtout dans la deuxième partie du film qui se passe au Yémen, cette lourdeur contrastant avec l'énergie communicative de la première partie. Le dépaysement sera d'ailleurs total pendant ce film qui nous entraine des luxuriants paysages des Highlands d'Ecosse avec ces lacs magnifiques aux déserts arides du Yémen mais néanmoins troublants de beauté.

Le Cheikh a dépensé 50 millions de dollars pour voir nager ses saumons à contre-courant, faut-il qu'il les aime ces créatures aquatiques pour adopter le précepte d'un certain Saint-Augustin, « la mesure de l'amour c'est d'aimer sans mesure."(De là à terminer par un  "aimez-vous les uns les autres", il n'y a qu'un pas que même le film ne franchit pas.)

Des saumons dans le désert  (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) est une comédie romantique britannique de Lasse Hallström sortie en 2012.

Résumé
Lorsqu’un richissime cheikh du Yémen se met en tête d’introduire des saumons dans les rivières de son pays,tout le monde pense qu’il s’agit d’une pure folie.Pourtant, entre volontés politiques et coups du destin, une jeune chargée d’affaires, Harriet, et un scientifique, Fred, vont se retrouver obligés de concrétiser ce rêve insensé.

Même si le projet est un vrai casse-tête, l’aventure tombe plutôt bien pour Fred et Harriet, dont la vie privée n’est pas au beau fixe…À travers les voyages, les rencontres et les innombrables péripéties que ce programme surréaliste occasionne, tout deux vont découvrir l’existence sous un jour différent. La pêche miraculeuse du cheikh va-t-elle servir d’appât à l’amour?(vous le saurez en écoutant le prochain épisode de Zappy Max..."çA VA BOUILLIIIIIRRR!")

Se connecter-la bonne blague.Ils auraient mieux fait d'appeler ça"se barrer".Quand Georgie s'installait dans son siège devant l'ordinateur,tel un retraité à la table de poker,parti pour rafler la mise,elle décollait.Nuit après nuit,au coeur de cette galaxie d'informations inutiles,elle allait à la rencontre d'individus et d'idées dont elle aurait pu se passer.Elle n'aurait pas pu dire pourquoi elle se fatiguait mais ça avalait le temps.

Au demeurant il fallait avouer que c'était bien agréable d'être débarassé de ce corps provisoirement :elle éprouvait une certaine griserie à n'avoir ni âge,ni sexe,ni passé.

On se trouvait devant une succession infinie de portails grands ouverts,de menus et de couloirs qui vous conduisaient à des rencontres brêves et indolores,où l'on vous faisait croire que la vie se réduisait à une balade aléatoire.Un monde sans conséquence amen.Et dans ce monde là,elle se sentait aussi légère qu'un ange.

Wes Anderson est un cinéaste américain, né le 1er mai 1969 à Houston (Texas).

Il rencontre Owen Wilson à l'université du Texas à Austin dans un cours d'écriture de scénario. Ils deviendront vite amis, jusqu'à partager la même chambre d'internat. C'est ainsi que les frères Wilson : Owen Wilson, Andrew et Luke joueront régulièrement dans ses films. Il décide de ne pas suivre d'études de cinéma et se lance dans un projet de court-métrage qui deviendra bientôt Bottle Rocket, son premier long-métrage.

Cet apprentissage par la pratique fait de Wes Anderson un réalisateur largement autodidacte. Correctement couvert par la critique, Bottle Rocket reste cependant un échec commercial..

En 1998, toujours aidé par les frères Wilson, il réalise Rushmore qui lui permet d'obtenir la reconnaissance auprès du grand public qui avait manqué à Bottle Rocket. Ce film lui permettra en outre d'accéder à un certain niveau d'estime au sein des cinéastes américains indépendants .

Profitant de son amitié avec les désormais célèbres Luke et Owen Wilson, Wes Anderson réalise, en 2001, La Famille Tenenbaum, film pour lequel il réunit Gene Hackman, Anjelica Huston, Ben Stiller et Bill Murray. Ce dernier incarnera ensuite Steve Zissou dans La Vie aquatique.

Roman Coppola est réalisateur deuxième équipe de ses films depuis La Vie aquatique, ainsi que scénariste et producteur de À bord du Darjeeling Limited.

Dans son cinquième long-métrage, À bord du Darjeeling Limited, Wes Anderson retrouve Owen Wilson, accompagné cette fois de Jason Schwartzman (déjà présent dans Rushmore) et Adrien Brody. Le film est projeté précédé du court métrage Hôtel Chevalier (2005), dans lequel jouent Schwartzman et Natalie Portman

Il réalise en 2010 Fantastic Mr. Fox, film d'animation adapté de la nouvelle Fantastique Maître Renard de Roald Dahl, auquel George Clooney, Meryl Streep et Bill Murray prêteront leur voix. Ce film remporte le Cristal du long métrage au Festival international du film d'animation d'Annecy.

ll aime les excentriques et les univers décalés. Wes Anderson n'est pas un Texan comme les autres. Il vit à New York, vient souvent à Paris où il rêve de tourner un film. Amoureux de la nouvelle vague, véritable autodidacte, il a imposé son style dès ses débuts en 1996 avec Bottle Rocket, comédie coécrite et interprétée par son ami d'enfance Owen Wilson.

Le plus singulier des réalisateurs indépendants américains a aussi joué avec les névroses familiales (La Famille Tenenbaum), s'est plongé dans des aventures sous-marines loufoques avec l'inénarrable Bill Murray en explorateur mégalo ( La Vie aquatique ).

En évitant le train-train, il nous a embarqués avec trois frères déboussolés dans une fantaisie ferroviaire au cœur du Rajasthan ( À bord du Darjeeling Limited ). Il a goûté avec succès à l'animation (Fantastic Mr Fox). Mais il ne faut pas trop se fier aux apparences. Sa loufoquerie est toujours teintée de gravité.

L'humour surréaliste sert à mieux dépeindre des adultes désemparés qui ne sont au fond que des gamins. Dernière particularité de Mr Anderson? Il écrit dans les cafés parisiens (À bord du Darjeeling Limited) ou bien dans les belles maisons toscanes (Moonrise Kingdom). Tout en restant maître en son royaume.

It had been arranged for the cast to stay in a nearby hotel, but eventually some of the actors also decided to stay at the mansion, including Edward Norton, Bill Murray, and Jason Schwartzman. Murray later joked that the theory was to have everyone close by  so that they could all work "ungodly art-movie hours."

If you've been following Mr. Anderson's relatively short career, you'll find more of the same here: a film that is full of quirkiness, which I find to be parables of the troubles we encounter in life. I came to this film without any expectations, having read nothing about it in the news so I was pleasantly surprised that the main protagonists are a couple of tweens.

Any fears of mine finding a sappy or saccharine story were vanquished and replaced with wonderment following the journey of the two main characters.Both actors didn't seem to have formal training but this didn't stop them from serving the story well. It is down to the genius of Mr. Anderson capturing their human performances which are nothing less than beautiful. I can't recommend this film highly enough!
